NFL analyst predicts Green Bay Packers will sign veteran QB

The Green Bay Packers know Jordan Love is the starting quarterback heading into 2023 (and possibly beyond) and they also drafted a QB to compete with current No. 2 QB, Danny Etling, for the main backup gig.

But, the Packers could certainly use some veteran experience in their QB room, and they know it.

“I think it would be nice to have someone who has some experience,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said at the NFL’s owners meetings back in March. “We have a lot of respect for Danny and what he’s done and would be very comfortable with him in the (No.) 2 spot, but I think we’ll look at a lot of different options.”

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell predicts the Packers will sign veteran QB Carson Wentz

Barnwell came out with 14 post-draft predictions on Tuesday and one of his predictions was the Packers signing the former MVP candidate and Super Bowl champ:

… An injury to Love would essentially end the Packers’ season, which is an argument for signing Wentz. The argument against the move comes down to the off-field stuff: Do you want to have your young quarterback in a room with a guy who has essentially been dumped by three NFL organizations in three seasons? Coach Matt LaFleur would have to ask himself whether the reward is worth the risk, but I could see a scenario where a one-year deal for Wentz to serve as the backup would pay off for Green Bay. – Bill Barnwell, ESPN

Barnwell’s 100% correct in his assessment that the Packers stand no chance if Love were to go down for the season or even an extended period of time. Etling and Clifford simply aren’t ready and the Packers don’t have a roster like the San Francisco 49ers did when Brock Purdy took over last year.

However, Barnwell picked the wrong Super Bowl-winning free agent quarterback.

Joe Flacco actually makes a lot more sense.

It’s because Flacco is very familiar with the Packers offense despite not playing for the team. How is that so? Well, Flacco played for the New York Jets the last two seasons, where Mike LaFleur, Matt LaFleur’s little brother, was offensive coordinator.

Mike’s offensive philosophy is very similar to Matt’s, as both stem from the mind of Kyle Shanahan. Flacco wasn’t spectacular with the Jets, by any means, but he did throw eight touchdowns to three interceptions in seven games. The key here, however, is the fact that Flacco can help Love and the younger QBs learn the offense due to his familiarity. Wentz can’t do that.

Sure, Love already knows the offense, but Flacco can still provide veteran mentorship to him and the younger guys. Wentz can do the same, but he is nowhere near as familiar with the offense and he may still think of himself as a starter. Whereas, Flacco knows what his role is, at this point.

Plus, Flacco isn’t a ticking time bomb on the field like Wentz is. The former first-rounder is certainly a shell of his younger self, but he offers more controlled, consistent play than what Wentz offers.

The Packers certainly need a veteran quarterback on the roster, but they need to pick Flacco over Wentz if it comes down to either one.
