Bengals Implementing Unique Offseason Program Once Again in 2023

The Cincinnati Bengals have taken a unique approach to recent offseason workouts and 2023 is not very different.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer detailed some of the ways the team differs from the rest of the franchises in terms of workload and time commitment.

Here are some of the top takeaways:

“Teams are allowed 10 OTA practices,” Breer wrote. “Which include the three that are generally allotted for a mandatory full-squad minicamp. The Bengals scheduled only six of those.”

Even though they have six of those sessions scheduled, the Phase 1 meetings just involved conditioning.

“While Cincinnati’s offseason program started at the same time as most other teams with returning head coaches (April 17), the team’s Phase I, at which point most clubs start positional and team meetings, had only strength-and-conditioning work,” Breer noted. “In scheduling things that way, Phase I would be truly voluntary in that no one would fall behind by missing those days.”

The Bengals have paired down the offseason in an attempt to have similar positive injury results down the stretch of the season.

Twisted ankles and broken bones are nearly impossible to predict or schedule through in the offseason, but soft tissue injuries have not been as big of an issue since starting on this track.
