Bengals have two of the better players at key position

The wide receiver position gets plenty of recognition when it comes to the Cincinnati Bengals with Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd on the roster. But, what about the guys the cover them in practice?

Well, the Bengals are doing too bad in that department either.

Cincinnati has some promising young, but unproven talent at cornerback like Cam Taylor-Britt, and rookie D.J. Turner. However, two of their established veterans, Chidobe Awuzie and Mike Hilton, made the list of the top cornerbacks in the NFL by Pro Football Focus as the ranked 18th and 22nd respectively.

Sam Monson on Awuzie:

An injury limited Chidobe Awuzie to just the first eight games of the season, but in those outings he didn’t allow a touchdown and was building on his strong 2021 campaign. Since arriving in Cincinnati, Awuzie has looked like one of the better cornerbacks in the game. He let up a catch on just 41.9% of passes into his coverage last season.

Awuzie came to the Bengals in 2021. He set a career-high in interceptions (2), tied his best mark with 14 pass breakups, and posted a career-best 84.2 coverage grade. Although he tore his ACL last year, he posted his third-highest coverage grade of 73.1 in the games he played.

His name has been one that has caused some controversy, especially during his days with the Dallas Cowboys. However, Awuzie has turned into a solid pro.

Monson on Hilton:

One of the best slot corners in the game, Hilton is a well-rounded defender from that position. He is an excellent run defender and tallied five pass breakups to go along with his lone interception in coverage last year.

Hilton came to Cincinnati the same year as Awuzie and he’s registered coverage grades of 73.6 and 72.3 over that span. He may be a smaller guy at 5’9″ and 185 pounds but Hilton can get physical at the line of scrimmage and disrupts routes pretty well.

With these two leading the way, a veteran like Sidney Jones IV in the stash, and some young horses on the depth chart, the Bengals are looking good at the cornerback spot.
