Lionel Messi’s first words as Paris Saint-Germain transfer confirmed following Chelsea interest

Lionel Messi says that he is determined to build something special with Paris Saint-Germain after his transfer was announced by the French club. The Barcelona superstar departed Barcelona after an extension to his contract could not be signed-off due to the Catalans’ considerable financial worries. The 34-year-old’s next destination was then revealed on Tuesday evening, with PSG announcing his arrival in the French capital.

The Spanish giants initially released a statement before Messi himself hosted an emotional press conference to confirm his exit. He was of course asked where his future lied, with Paris Saint-Germain immediately being installed as favourties. Chelsea were also credited with an interest in the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

He replied: “That’s honestly one possibility [PSG], to reach those heights. At the minute, I’ve got nothing agreed with anybody. “When the press release was released, I got a lot of calls from many clubs interested. At the minute I have not got anything closed, but we are talking about a lot of things.” The 34-year-old’s next destination was then revealed on Tuesday evening, with PSG announcing his arrival in the French capital.

Talking to the club’s official website, the Argentine set out his ambitions. He said: “I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain.”Everything about the club matches my football ambitions. I know how talented the squad and the coaching staff are here. “I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes.”

Messi has penned a two-year deal in Paris with the option of a third year and is set to wear the No.30 shirt at the Parc des Princes, with former Barcelona teammate Neymar retaining the No.10.
