Willie Anderson opened up about his 2022 training camp conversation with Joe Burrow. Anderson appeared on Cincinnati Bengals Talk with James Rapien and described how impressed he is with how Burrow doesn’t shred his offensive linemen in public comments.
Only Bronco’s quarterback Russell Wilson has been sacked more than Joe Burrow since 2020.
“I want to thank you as a former lineman,” Anderson told Burrow. “How you handle yourself during a game with your offensive linemen. As offensive linemen, we always look to see which quarterback is really cool with his guy, which offensive linemen really ride with their quarterback.”
Anderson described how Boomer Esiason treated his O-line with a ton of respect in his backup return to Cincinnati in 1997. That made them want to fight for him when he did end up starting five games.
“You still want to be that guy, that leader,” Anderson said about Esiason. “And once he took over the spot. The lineman never wanted to be the guy that got Boomer hit. Because he was doing so many good things. … He started the Dallas Cowboys game. He came in after the game and gave every starter like $1,500.”
Boomer and Joe know how to take care of their offensive linemen. Burrow actually gifted his 2022 protection unit cruises with a guest included.
