Key Packers player poised for breakout season

Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr named the most underrated player on each NFC team this week and he went with a young choice for the Green Bay Packers.

Orr suggested that second-year wide receiver Romeo Doubs is Green Bay’s most underrated player.

From SI.com: I don’t think we’ll be able to fully appreciate for some time what Doubs, a sixth-round pick in 2022, did during his rookie season. With a hampered quarterback who expected familiarity on the fly, Doubs carved out a role for himself by any means necessary. He was great in screen traffic when Aaron Rodgers had to lean on the quick game and added about as many yards after the catch (on average) as the elite Amon-Ra St. Brown in Detroit. When the Packers could identify a weakness in opposing cornerbacks, much like they did against the Patriots, Doubs could get on the same page and rock a back-shoulder fade like a seasoned professional. It is worth keeping tabs on what he can do with a full offseason behind him and a more complete relationship with his quarterback.

Doubs was a fourth round selection by the Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The former Nevada standout played in 13 games for the Packers last season and he put up modest numbers, catching 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns.

Doubs can take a big step forward in 2023, but only if he develops a solid connection with quarterback Jordan Love, who will start for Green Bay this fall.

So far, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is happy with what he’s seen from Doubs.

“I think that ‘Rome’ has done a nice job of really making that next step,” said LaFleur earlier this month.

“Now, he’s got to go out and do it in games, what we’ve seen from him in practice, just how deliberate he is with what he’s trying to work on. He’s done a great job of really getting his feet in the ground, running violent routes, violent cuts, being aggressive with his hands. I think he’s shown a lot of progress. Just the rapport that those two guys have shown throughout eight practices has been pretty solid.”

Love has been a fan of what he’s seen from Doubs this offseason, too.

“When in doubt, you can throw it out there and you know he’s going to make a play, and he’s done a great job of going and getting the ball wherever it’s at,” said Love during OTAs in early June. “He’s made some really tough catches, and it kind of just builds everybody’s confidence. It builds my confidence in him, just being able to throw the ball out there and know he’s going to make a play.”

Doubs certainly seems poised to play a key role for Green Bay in 2023. And that should lead to a breakout season for the California native.
