How Jordan Love is accepting the change that comes with being Packers QB

Jordan Love accepting the change that comes with being Packers QB

We all know by now that Jordan Love is the Green Bay Packers quarterback for what the team hopes is the foreseeable future.

The franchise has been very fortunate enough to have two Hall of Fame-caliber fixtures at QB since 1992. While that’s awesome for the team and its fans, it’s also a tough torch to carry, as Love is following in the biggest of footsteps.

Love has been waiting for this moment ever since he was drafted No. 26 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Since then, it’s been obvious that he is the successor to Aaron Rodgers. Therefore, 2023 isn’t a completely new experience.

At the same time however, officially becoming the face of the franchise is a big change and it’s easily the biggest change Love has encountered this offseason.

“Obviously there’s a lot of changes,” Love told reporters Wednesday. “There’s a lot more opportunities that pop up and things like that. I try to keep the main thing the main thing and let people know I’m trying to focus on ball, right now. There’s a lot going on in my life. I just want to focus on football since this is my first year as a starter and lock in on that…

“… Being an NFL quarterback, you’re under a light and everybody sees what you do. I think that’s been the biggest difference.”

I’m sure it’s not fun -nor easy- to know you’re the future while sitting on the bench. That experience has prepped Love for this moment, though.

He saw what it was like for Rodgers and how the NFL’s most popular players receive all kinds of non-football opportunities (see: Jeopardy!). It’s easy to get swooped up in all of the hubbub and lose sight of what’s in front of you.

All of that may work for an experienced vet like Rodgers, but Love knows he’s not in that same position. He’s playing it smart and taking things one step at a time.

And that first step is becoming the best Packers quarterback he can become.

“I’m trying not to do so much in life to where I’m pulled so many different ways and I can’t relax and settle down or focus on what I need to focus on,” said Love. “I tell people all the time that I’m trying to focus on this year and not do too much outside [of football]. Obviously, life changes a little bit when you go from a backup to a starter.”

Love easily has the right mindset in his approach. And what makes it all the better is he’s having more fun, now, than he was, then.

“It’s definitely a little bit more fun,” said Love. “… I’m enjoying this. It’s definitely a little more fun.”
