Boston Red Sox Insider Details Situation with Outfielder Ahead of Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox made the decision this week to limit Kiké Hernández’s exposure to shortstop. After leading the league in errors, manager Alex Cora has said that Hernandez will play more centerfield and second base.

That said, he is no longer an every day player for the Red Sox. Assuming good health, the Sox also have Jarren Duran, Adam Duvall, Alex Verdugo, Rob Refsnyder and Masataka Yoshida to play in the outfield and they have Christian Arroyo, Pablo Reyes and Yu Chang as options at second. Eventually Trevor Story will be back from injury.

While Hernandez will play for this team, his overall role is in question and you have to wonder if he has more value to another team than to the Red Sox.

Speaking this week on ‘The Brady Farkas Show’ on WDEV Radio, Sox Insider Tom Caron of NESN assessed the situation this way:

“The experiment has failed at shortstop. We know that. Fourteen errors, 13 throwing errors, but the 14 is the most of anyone at any position in baseball and now there’s no room to put him back in the outfield…. it’s hard to imagine Alex Cora trading one of his favorite players or giving the thumbs up to trading one of his favorite players.”

From this writer’s perspective, the Red Sox should look at trading him. He doesn’t have a clearly defined role on this team and could net a prospect back in return.

He has versatility, playoff pedigree, World Series experience and an expiring contract, all of which make him desirable to a contender.

He’s hitting .229 this year with six homers and 28 RBI.

The Red Sox play the Yankees on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. ET
